Week 1 of S.A.C.’s Songwriting & Blogging Challenge.

Week 1 of S.A.C.’s Songwriting & Blogging Challenge.

And so it begins; Week 1 of S.A.C.’s Songwriting & Blogging Challenge.

A weekly songwriting challenge over the next six weeks. This week is all about songstarters: the title, or the theme, or the opening line….to stimulate your muse. We’re to list three existing songs under each category that inspire us; then list five titles, themes, and opening lines of our own. Then we choose one of ours, and write a song with it.

Three existing song titles that intrigue me, and if I didn’t already know the song, would press play to hear more:

1.      Call Me Maybe
2.      Black Velvet
3.      Helluva Life

Three hit songs that dig deep into their expressed themes:
1.      Yellow Submarine – fanciful and fun…livens up the child in us all
2.      The Heart of the Matter – forgiveness
3.      Boys Round Here – driving home the Redneck image

Three opening lines, that draw you in instantly:
1.      “In these moments of loss and torment”…..from the song ‘Always’ by Killswitch Engage
2.      “I surrender, I give up”….from ‘If You Stole My Heart’, written by John Condrone
3.      “I heard there was a secret chord”…..from ‘Hallelujah’, written by Leonard Cohen

Possible titles for my songs:
1.      Fell So Hard
2.      Free Bird
3.      Sun Kissed
4.      Just Sayin’
5.      Rusty

Possible themes for my songs:
1.      Fell in love
2.      Freedom
3.      Sweetness
4.      Cheekiness
5.      Robbery story

Possible first lines for my songs:
1.      When my friends talk about all they have, so in love
2.      Her heels barely touched the floor
3.      Sunlight danced across her face
4.      Now where were we?
5.      She winked at him and said

So, which song did I choose to write? I went with “Fell So Hard” with the opening line: ‘When my friends talk about all they have, so in love’. The theme: falling in love (with a touch of cheekiness to the song)

Fell So Hard

When my friends talk about all they have so in love
I think Oh Come ‘on give me a break
They carry on way too much with their googly eyes
Almost more than I can take

It’s like a scene from a day-time soap sticky sweet
tacky ways sappy happy crap
I can’t get my head ‘round that kind of thought that aint’ me
I’m way cooler than that, and then

I fell so hard
I can feel the earth shake under me
And it’s about to explode
I fell so hard
I can feel my heart throb in my throat
A crazy overload
Yeah, I fell so hard.

Backing out of my space and then bam there she was
In a most inconvenient way
My Corvette met her daisy painted VW bus
Man, I thought “This really wrecks my day”

Long legs stepping out she was cussing me out
I only saw her lips move
I was dazed and confused came unglued
Didn’t know what was happening to me

I fell so hard
I can feel the earth shake under me
And it’s about to explode
I fell so hard
I can feel my heart throb in my throat
A crazy overload
Yeah, I fell so hard.

On that hot summer day
Now we’re locking lips goo goo eyes all the way
PDAing all over the place
And I don’t care what my friends say

I fell so hard
I can feel the earth shake under me
And it’s about to explode
I fell so hard
I can feel my heart throb in my throat
A crazy overload
Yeah, I fell so hard.
